Imagine that! What has been quite the trend ever since we were all ¨cooped¨ up due to the COVID-19 pandemic was actually what was recommended all along. When we first got chickens, it had nothing to do with the pandemic for us. Our children were old enough to finally understand how to not squeeze the life out of the baby chicks (Of Mice and Men...yikes) and we were in a place where we were willing to add to our daily chores. However, once I began making brooders and coops I came to realize that we were not alone in this new venture.
In an article posted to https://www.aarp.org/home-family/your-home/info-2020/backyard-chickens.html, it explains all of the various ways people dabbled with the homesteading lifestyle due to the pandemic. Heck, I sold a chicken coop and run to someone to who had started renting their flock! I never even knew that was a possibility until then.
This makes me wonder. In an economy where store-bought eggs are fluctuating between $6-7 per dozen, will this trend continue? Is our society in for a refresh of the past? If that is to be then we, for one, won´t mind. We started this journey for our children and the generations to come. As teachers, we both saw the downsides of a society so dependent upon dependency and decided to do our best to build a life for our family that was a bit of a throwback. Now the challenge is getting them to love and appreciate the work as much as we do!
